ADVENT I |

More to follow towards the end of
November. |
Brief notes on some of the Feasts of November.
November 1.
THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS. We can pay no
greater honour to the Saints than by offering up to God in their
name the Blood of Jesus. The efficacy of their past merits and
present prayers is greatly increased when offered to God in close
association with the merits and prayers of Our Lord. Therefore the
Church commemorates on this day all the Saints in heaven without
exception, and thus honours also those who are unknown and who have
no public recognition in the Liturgy.
November 2.
ALL SOULS DAY.
The practice of recommending to God the souls of the departed that
we may mitigate any pains which they suffer, and that He may
soon bring them to His glory, is most pleasing to God and profitable
to us. It is a belief that God manifests to them our prayers
for them so that they may also pray for us. We should remember and
recommend to Our Lord Jesus Christ, His Holy Mother and all the
saints and all the souls of the departed but especially those of our
relatives, friends, benefactors and enemies
November 11.
S. MARTIN
OF TOURS, Bishop and Confessor.
S. Martin, Bishop of Tours in France, was at first a soldier and
then a monk under the direction of S. Hilary. Famous through his
boundless charity to the poor, He died AD 397
November 21.
THE PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.
As soon as she was able to walk Mary would have been taken to the
Temple by her holy parents, Joachim and Anne. She must have
remembered this in the words of the psalmist, ‘How lovely are Thy
tabernacles, O Lord of Hosts; my soul longeth and fainteth for the
courts of the Lord’. Have we any of the same desire to consecrate
our lives to Our Lord?
ADVENT SUNDAY.
The beginning of the Church's new year.
(As 30 November is a Sunday, S. Andrew the Apostle is celebrated by
the Church this year on December 1.)
